National data guardian5/1/2023 Principle 8: Inform patients and service users about how their confidential information is usedĪ range of steps should be taken to ensure no surprises for patients and service users, so they can have clear expectations about how and why their confidential information is used, and what choices they have about this. They should be supported by the policies of their employers, regulators and professional bodies. Health and social care professionals should have the confidence to share confidential information in the best interests of patients and service users within the framework set out by these principles. Principle 7: The duty to share information for individual care is as important as the duty to protect patient confidentiality All those handling confidential information are responsible for ensuring that their use of and access to that information complies with legal requirements set out in statute and under the common law. Principle 6: Comply with the lawĮvery use of confidential information must be lawful. Principle 5: Everyone with access to confidential information should be aware of their responsibilitiesĪction should be taken to ensure that all those handling confidential information understand their responsibilities and obligations to respect the confidentiality of patient and service users. This may mean introducing access controls or splitting information flows where one flow is used for several purposes. Only those who need access to confidential information should have access to it, and then only to the items that they need to see. Principle 4: Access to confidential information should be on a strict need-to-know basis Where use of confidential information is considered to be necessary, each item of information must be justified so that only the minimum amount of confidential information is included as necessary for a given function. Principle 3: Use the minimum necessary confidential information The need to identify individuals should be considered at each stage of satisfying the purpose(s) and alternatives used where possible. Principle 2: Use confidential information only when it is necessaryĬonfidential information should not be included unless it is necessary for the specified purpose(s) for which the information is used or accessed. Principle 1: Justify the purpose(s) for using confidential informationĮvery proposed use or transfer of confidential information should be clearly defined, scrutinised and documented, with continuing uses regularly reviewed by an appropriate guardian. Where a novel and/or difficult judgment or decision is required, it is advisable to involve a Caldicott Guardian. They are primarily intended to guide organisations and their staff, but it should be remembered that patients, service users and/or their representatives should be included as active partners in the use of confidential information. In some instances, the principles should also be applied to the processing of staff information. This may include for instance, details about symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, names and addresses. The principles are intended to apply to all data collected for the provision of health and social care services where patients and service users can be identified and would expect that it will be kept private. These principles apply to the use of confidential information within health and social care organisations and when such information is shared with other organisations and between individuals, both for individual care and for other purposes. There are also important uses of information for purposes other than individual care, which contribute to the overall delivery of health and social care or serve wider public interests. Good information sharing is essential for providing safe and effective care.

Ocr convert pdf to text5/1/2023 Some systems are capable of reproducing formatted output that closely approximates the original page including images, columns, and other non-textual components. Advanced systems capable of producing a high degree of recognition accuracy for most fonts are now common, and with support for a variety of digital image file format inputs. OCR is a field of research in pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and computer vision.Early versions needed to be trained with images of each character, and worked on one font at a time. Optical character recognition or optical character reader (OCR) is the electronic or mechanical conversion of images of typed, handwritten or printed text into machine-encoded text, whether from a scanned document, a photo of a document, a scene-photo (for example the text on signs and billboards in a landscape photo) or from subtitle text superimposed on an image (for example from a television broadcast).Widely used as a form of data entry from printed paper data records – whether passport documents, invoices, bank statements, computerized receipts, business cards, mail, printouts of static-data, or any suitable documentation – it is a common method of digitizing printed texts so that they can be electronically edited, searched, stored more compactly, displayed on-line, and used in machine processes such as cognitive computing, machine translation, (extracted) text-to-speech, key data and text mining. Pro Tip: If you want to convert multiple pages to text, PDF format is the most efficient as all pages can be uploaded in one batch. Chalk and cheese5/1/2023 Chalk or cheese? Back in 2016, we put it to the vote. Back then, chalky landscape of Kent won out but we’re ready now to swap over to Cheshire, and although it involves closing one gallery for a few more days it couldn’t be happening at a more appropriate moment. Some of you might remember the public campaign- Chalk or Cheese?-which we ran to help us decide which one should take pride of place first. In spite of this global reach, this was a project that spoke powerfully of British identity and to the core Festival themes of land and people.Knowing that textiles are vulnerable objects and that our audiences want to see more of our amazing reserve collection, for the last five years we’ve had another wall-hanging from the series ready to take Kent’s place in the gallery. O’Connell himself was a fascinating international figure who had moved to Australia in 1920 before returning to England in the mid-1930s. The finished hangings echoed colour designs that had been sketched out by O’Connell, which were then reproduced on textile using wax-resist dyes and with the help of studio assistants and sister duo, Iris and Betty Sheridan. Designed by ‘lost modernist’ Michael O’Connell, the work sought to capture the character of eight different regions of Britain’s farmed landscape. This entire artwork featured prominently in the Country Pavilion of the Festival of Britain Exhibition on London’s Southbank during 1951. This is one of seven 3.8-metre-high sections that were originally created for a 46-metre-long undulating display called the ‘Diversity of British Farming’. This section depicts scenes of farming and rural life in Kent. Displayed in our Our Country Lives gallery, this wall-hanging by Michael O’Connell is one of eight artworks from a series. Here, oast houses, trees, farms, hop fields, and hedgerows merge in a landscape of stylised patterns set against the colour-palette and perspective of an old manorial map. Read on to find out why the extra wait will be worth it!Īs many of you know, our current displays culminate in the striking sight of an enormous mid-century textile artwork showing rural Kent. We are sorry to say it means our first visitors back will have to socially distance from the Our Country Lives gallery for a little longer, which has to stay locked down for just a few more days to allow the changeover to take place. As he explains, this has been in the pipeline since we relaunched the galleries in 2016. All Rights Reserved. As we get ready to share the Museum with visitors once again, Curator of MERL Collections Ollie Douglas is to hand to reveal a change to our displays. He is not close to being the best driver. Hence - chalk is good, and long chalk better. This refers to the old schoolroom custom of making merit marks in chalk. To win a race by a long chalk is to win easily, by some distance. The phrase is first recorded in the States in 1890, where lots of things were and are said to be big - not just cheeses but shots, enchiladas and cojones, all meaning much the same thing.Īnother old English saying. English-speakers thought they were hearing 'the real cheese', which in turn became into 'the big cheese' on arrival in the United States. And sadly for the cheese lobby, this usage deerives not from the foodstuff, but from the Persian or Hindi word chiz, meaning 'thing'.Ī word heard and used by Britons in the Empire, chiz migrated to Britain in the phrase 'the real chiz' (the real thing not being, in this case, anything to do with Coca-Cola!). Unlike cheesy or cheesed off, this is an example of cheese seen as something generally positive - a person of great import. Not surprisingly, this meaning is also derived from mouldy cheese. To be 'cheesy' is to be cheap, naff and unsubtle. Similar in origin, perhaps, to being 'browned off'. There appear to be no reasons why this state of mind should be associated with cheese, other than it is plainly and uncomfortably clear when it goes 'off'. To be upset, bitter or miserable at the actions of others. Or in other words, the ways in which differences are described in the USA and Britain are. Americans prefer to describe differences as 'like night and day'. Surprisingly, while that historic divide is an ancient one, the phrase doesn't seem to have crossed the Atlantic like so many others. They were, or so they liked to say, like chalk and cheese. Meanwhile, farmers to the west of town benefited from grassy green pastures where cattle were raised - and cheeses made.īoth sets of farmers came to sell their wares at Salisbury Market but never mixed. The origins of the phrase can be traced back to Wiltshire, where they are quite proud of it.įarmers in the area around Salisbury Plain were obliged to raise sheep because of the chalky nature of the land. Jasona1976 asks: Where does the saying 'like chalk and cheese' come from

Hack city girl life 20155/1/2023 Police declined to comment on whether they would try to speak to him. Neither Cameron’s office nor the Department for Culture, Media and Sport plan to speak to him during the visit, spokespeople said. A senior police officer said the London police force had been ‘very damaged’ by its failure to press an initial investigation into telephone hacking at the News of the World.Ĭameron’s opponents have scented an opportunity in their efforts to block Murdoch’s $14 billion bid for the 61 percent of the profitable pay-TV operator BSkyB that News Corp, the world’s largest news conglomerate, does not already own. It has also brought to light accusations that journalists working for Murdoch and others illegally paid police for information. The scandal has raised questions about relations between politicians, including Prime Minister David Cameron - who hired a former editor of the paper as his spin doctor - and media barons such as News Corp chairman and chief executive Murdoch. “This is not where we wanted to be and it’s not where we deserve to be, but as a final tribute to 7.5 million readers, this is for you and for the staff, thank you.” Murdoch had seemed on the point of clinching approval for a cherished prize, the buyout of broadcaster BSkyB, only last week but revelations phone-hacking had extended beyond celebrities to relatives of a murdered girl, of victims of 2005 London bomb attacks and of soldiers killed in action stirred broad public anger.Įditor Colin Myler told media massed outside the newspaper’s offices he deeply regretted the newspaper’s closure. “All human life was here,” the News of the World declared. For admirers it had been a stock feature of lazy Sundays, for critics it had become a symbol of craven irresponsibility in the British media. His car sped out of the complex again 15 minutes later but it was not clear what meetings he had plannedīest known for its lurid headlines exposing misadventures of the rich, royal and famous, the last News of the World said simply “Thank You & Goodbye” over a montage of some of its most celebrated splashes of the past 168 years. Wearing a white panama-style hat, he ignored reporters massed at the entrance, focusing his attention on the newspaper he bought in 1969 as the cornerstone of a vast media empire. Murdoch, 80, swept into his London headquarters in the front passenger seat of a red Range Rover car, holding up the last edition of the best selling newspaper, the News of the World, that he had closed hours earlier in a bid to contain the crisis.

Are raccoons nocturnal5/1/2023 Raccoons are widely known for their unusual habit of “washing” their food or hands in water. Thankfully, there are plenty of humane, common-sense solutions to perceived conflicts with these wild animals. While some people take great delight in watching raccoons’ nightly antics, others consider the animals’ high jinks a nuisance. These clever, gregarious animals with the characteristic black mask surrounding their eyes have been known to pry the lids off sealed garbage cans, raid campsites and coolers, and even turn on the tap for a drink of water. For these reasons, close encounters between raccoons and humans are extremely common in urban and suburban areas. Though humans have occupied the vast majority of their traditional habitat, raccoons are opportunistic and curious animals and have learned to coexist with people. They hunt at night camouflaged by their distinctive coats and rest by day in the hollows of high trees. Highly independent and somewhat solitary creatures, raccoons are nocturnal. A raccoon’s forefeet are extremely agile and resemble human hands with their five slender fingers. Raccoons possess acute senses of sight and hearing and a highly developed sense of touch. They will eat whatever is available, using their dexterous paws to pluck morsels from small hiding places. Like their cousins, raccoons are true omnivores who eat a wide variety of foods, including nuts, seeds, fruits, eggs, insects, frogs, and crayfish. Raccoons share a common ancestry with bears, and they originally lived in forests close to waterways.

Materialize responsive columns stack5/1/2023 More often than not, these entities build profitable businesses around their offering. Backed by Twitter: An emerging trend in open source is the rise of projects sponsored by a commercial entity. For consultants and product companies alike, this means pre-built items and community support will always be plenty. The number of website layouts, themes, admin panels, UI components, etc., built using Bootstrap is mind-boggling, and it keeps getting better. Large ecosystem: As of today, Bootstrap has the largest ecosystem among front-end frameworks. All you need to do write out the HTML, and then applying the appropriate CSS classes causes the responsiveness to come alive. Rapid prototyping: With Bootstrap, there’s almost no need to spend thought on tricky CSS positioning and browser incompatibilities. There’s much to like about Bootstrap, especially for full-stack developers: The syntax now is a lot more pleasant, though it demands familiarity with Flexbox. To make a div take up one-third of the screen width on large-size devices, and half the width in medium-size devices. In the lower versions of Bootstrap, the grid was defined as a total of 12 columns, which resulted in code such as The above syntax is how you’d code in Bootstrap 4, which owes a lot of its elegance to the raw power of Flexbox and other modern layout features supported by browsers directly. The current popular version of Bootstrap is 4, which was a major overhaul over the 3.3 series. For example, if you have three “boxes” you want to position side by side on large screens, but vertically on smaller screens, this is what you’d do: A grid is an invisible partition of the screen into columns (along with the width). 3.0)īootstrap achieved responsive design by introducing the idea of a grid. It was the first framework to promote the philosophy of “mobile-first.” No longer was designing for smaller screen sizes a separate project in itself all you needed to do was include the relevant Bootstrap classes, and the design would automatically adjust for different screen sizes (well, almost). So if you’re tired of hand-coding CSS rules, dive in for some quick relief! BootstrapĪn initiative by Twitter, Bootstrap takes credit for introducing responsive design on a large scale. This post casts a sweeping glance at the front-end development landscape and compares the front-runners among CSS frameworks. Today we can’t imagine coding without our favorite CSS framework, as targeting multiple screen sizes has become a necessity.īut how do you know your framework is the best for the job at hand? Also, if you’re new to front-end development, which framework should help you pick? No wonder, then, that CSS frameworks emerged over time and took most of the pain away. It’s a standard that evolved haphazardly, was interpreted differently by different browser manufacturers, and is now so full of contradictions that nobody dares call themselves a “CSS expert”. And even if you manage to pull it off, there’s always the lurking fear that it might just break horribly on some stupid browser somewhere! CSS ties for the first spot of “necessary web evils” along with JavaScript. Doing something that sounds as easy and common-sense-driven as centering a box within a box is incredibly difficult to work out in CSS. I once heard a front-end developer joke, “The NASA has landed robots on Mars, and here we’re still struggling to center-align our divs!” And it makes me feel bad that this joke has a lot of truth in it.
